What is Gamescom?

Gamescom bills itself as “The leading European trade fair for digital gaming culture [and] is the meeting point for global companies from the entertainment industry and the international community”… And they’re right.

With a record breaking 335,000 visitors to pass through its halls this year, Gamescom is the largest digital media exhibition in the western world and second largest in the world after Chinajoy. It boasts almost every large publisher in the world, and hosts pavilions for all major gaming countries.

Oh Canada

One of the partner countries for this year’s Gamescom was Canada. As the largest producer of video games per capita and one of the largest exporters worldwide, Canada is at the forefront of game creation and production. More than 50 companies were at attendance at Gamescom 2017, including Magmic, to promote their work on the international stage. The Canadian Government, at both federal and provincial levels, have shown a strong desire to promote and accelerate this tremendous industry.

According to The Honourable Mélanie Joly, Minister of Canadian Heritage, “Canada’s video game sector employs thousands of talented and creative people whose diverse voices and skills are helping drive our success in the global market. As the largest producer of video games per capita in the world, Canada’s gaming industry continues to innovate and grow while injecting more than $3 billion into the Canadian economy each year. Our country’s participation as the partner country at Gamescom 2017 is part of our commitment to re-establish our presence on the international cultural scene and give Canadian creators and artists every chance to seize opportunities provided by new markets and audiences.”

This is good news for Canadian Digital Media content creators.

Canada Media Fund

An exciting development this year at Gamescom 2017 was the announcement by the Canada Media Fund (CMF) of a new partnership between Canada and Germany on digital media codevelopment and coproduction.

“The Canada Media Fund (CMF) and Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg (MBB), the body responsible for film funding and media business development in the German states of Berlin and Brandenburg, announced at Gamescom an agreement to establish an incentive for the codevelopment and coproduction of digital media projects between Canadian producers and German producers based in Berlin-Brandenburg.”
